The Southern Railways Group was formed in 1965 to study and disseminate information about the Southern Railway, the Southern Region of British Railways, its successors and minor railways in Southern England. Publications include data sheets, a bi-monthly newsletter and a quarterly glossy magazine.
The aim of the Group is to:
Collect and disseminate information of all kinds relating to the history. engineering and operation of these railways;
Publish relevant material, in particular that of interest to modellers and historians;
Stimulate and assist the modelling of these railways;
Assist members to meet formally and informally.
The Group also produces the Phoenix range of coaching stock kits for modellers working in 4mm scale and has an active Sales operation, which whilst catering primarily for the Southern modeller, also caters for those modelling the other three of the Big Four plus BR.
There is also an e-mail discussion group, with associated photo and file storage facilities, exclusively for SRG members.
Members receive the bi-monthly "Southern Newsletter" (dealing with current affairs, preservation news, forthcoming attractions, members notices and sales information.)
The quarterly glossy "Southern Notebook" contains articles with drawings and photographs as appropriate relating to such diverse matters as locomotives and train working, branch line histories , wagon details and notes from SR Board minutes.
The Group has an extensive library of books, magazines, data sheets and plans, which include items such as track plans, signalling diagrams, timetables, carriage numbering and set formations.
A portfolio system provides members with comprehensive information on specific topics such as, for example, the Callington branch, Southern Railway utility vans and SR Publicity.
In short, anything and everything the Southern enthusiast could wish for !
